World Cup 2010: A Healthy Lesson

It only happens once every four years, and man, is it exciting! World Cup fever has hit the world, and Toronto is one of the most enjoyable places to catch it.

I love that there are so many diverse ethnic groups in Toronto, that no matter who wins or loses a match, there will always be a jubilant group of people celebrating somewhere on the streets...sometimes it can be a passing carload of fans honking their horns or other times an impromptu parade will start. Hilarious and fun! You can't help but be happy for them.

While the rest of the world's soccer-playing countries suffer from societal depression when their teams are knocked out of the running, Canada will be cheering all the way to the finals. The bonus of living in a country that has not qualified since the '86 World Cup, and is hardly expected to qualify in the near future, is that we are not, as a whole, overly invested emotionally in any particular team. This allows us the freedom to cheer our own team, or jeer our friends' or co-workers' teams wins and losses with only minimal antagonism.

Although I'm upset that South Korea (was fun having my wife right in there, glued to the game with me!) was eliminated from 2nd round play by Uruguay yesterday, I look forward to Japan beating Paraguay this coming Tuesday. :) Both teams are lowest ranked in the round of 16, but have played strong, and I have been very impressed.

Toronto World Cup: It's a lesson for life!

Enjoy your ups, appreciate your downs and keep your expectations reasonable. Don't get overly involved emotionally in any situation, but relish the fun while it happens.

Oh, and of course, there are physical lessons to take out of this...add interval training to your work out routine! There's a reason professional soccer players are some of the best athletes in the world.

Sprint, jog, sprint, jog, sprint, jog...you can't get a better cardio/lower body work out!
